Last year, Research in Motion Limited (RIM) released a new version of their Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES). Version 5.x is designed to provide a more secure and easily-managed platform to activate and administer Blackberry devices and user accounts, using the Blackberry Administration Service (BAS). A change in architecture from version 4.x to 5.x is required in order to take advantage of multiple Blackberry Domains, with multiple BES instances and remote components within a single configuration database.
